Celebrating the heritage of historic churches across the North East of England.

The Spirit in Stone project has worked with 50 churches in 7 local area 'clusters', to engage volunteers and visitors in the rich cultural heritage of historic places of worship in the North East. This was made possible by a grant of £38,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The project included events for children and adults, training workshops for church volunteers, exhibition materials and information for visitors, and the creation of several local heritage trails.

Spirit in Stone publications

Church Buildings for Everyone - A Visitor Welcome Toolkit is a practical resource to help volunteers in local churches to enhance their visitor welcome, plan new activities and produce new materials. Copies are being distributed to parishes in the dioceses of Newcastle and Durham, but the contents are now also available to download free of charge.

The 'Spirit in Stone' guide is a full-colour booklet covering 125 priceless local churches and Christian heritage sites across the North East of England. You can view a full PDF copy here (note: if you wish to download or print from this, it is a large file).

The Spirit in Stone website www.spiritinstone.co.uk offers a searchable directory of churches, trails and other ideas for exploring North East churches. We are currently in the process of updating this - if you wish your church to be added please click here for further information.

Six new Church heritage trails have also been created, also a trail for children  - click here for details.
