The church of St Michael’s and All Angels is located in the isolated upland village of Alnham, set in the foothills of the Cheviots. The village today is made up of a loose arrangement of farming and residential buildings of which several are listed Grade II.
The church is part of the Upper Coquetdale Parish. It has a small but growing congregation, and is very well attended at key services such as Christmas Eve, Easter and Remembrance Sunday. It is also used occasionally through the year for community events and educational activities and offers a useful starting point and welcome shelter for walkers and hikers exploring the Cheviot hills. It also draws visitors with family links and those with an interest in its long and rich history. Its tranquil atmosphere, stunning setting and fine acoustics also add to the church’s special qualities and appeal.
Alnham has made important progress as a result of Inspired Futures. The completion of the HLF project was a significant achievement, and in the final stages of Inspired Futures, progress was made towards building new partnership links and establishing a better foundation to make best use of the repaired and improved church building which is now available.
Through the project St Michael’s has secured:
- A revised and realistic vision and direction for future development
- A legacy of learning and enhanced skills capacity through the mentoring process
- Building improvements (linked to the existing HLF GPOW project, but partly enabled by IF in the challenging circumstances they faced) which give the basis for a more sustainable future.
